Largest ever LPG consignment arrives
KARACHI, Dec. 18 - For the first time in country's
history, a bulk consignment of 5,000 metric tons of imported
liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has arrived and unloaded at
Port Qasim to meet the domestic demand during winter.
According to chairman, FPCCI Standing Committee
on LPG and All Pakistan LPG Distributors Association Hadi
Khan here Saturday, the entire consignment was unloaded at
Engro Vopak Terminal Ltd at Port Qasim, in a record time of
Hadi, who imported this LPG, said that before
this consignment, only one multinational company had imported
3,600 MT of LPG in bulk quantity in Pakistan.
He said that LPG has been imported from Abu
Dhabi through LPG/C. Queen Zenobia and its cost of import
is about Rs 106,500 per ton. This LPG will be shipped to ease
the on-going acute shortage of LPG in hilly and remote areas,
and also in automotive and industrial sectors and LPG shortage
"The domestic production has been slashed to 1200 MT
per day by the local producers and there was no option with
us except to import a large quantity of LPG to bridge the
yawning demand and supply gap in the country and also to end
the cartel of local LPG groups", he added.
Hadi pointed out that 56,000 MT of LPG has been
imported since January 2010 till today against an import of
70,536 MT in the same period last year.
He said that the rising Saudi Aramco Contract
Price (CP) and government's decision not to withdraw sales
tax on LPG import have resulted in the decline of its import.
He urged the government to withdraw sales tax
on the import of LPG to encourage its import by the private
sector in the country so as to control the on-going energy
crisis and reduce ever rising LPG prices in the domestic market.
